Graphics and user interface design

Overview

24 Hours of UX is an annual design virtual conference organised by a group of UI/UX designers or strategist around the globe. The conference itself will feature talks that will literally run for 24 Hours straight. The theme of this year's conference (2023) was about the future of UX and prior to me joining. Additionally, I also spoke at the event about growth as a designer in 2022. You can find the video here.

My role

I was invited by a former board member of the organising team to join as a visual designer to help out with any graphical and visual design along with another designer based in Australia. As I have some familiarity with the graphics and also a former speaker of the event I took on the task to lead the visual direction.

So what kind of graphics and visuals I'm producing?

There were several key deliverables I needed to complete so that the event can go smoothly. Without the graphics and visuals, there will not be any marketing materials to share and also since it is a virtual it won't be as engaging and interesting. 24 Hrs of UX wasn't just any virtual conference, the team put a lot of effort to create a great experience prior to the event, during the sessions and also post event so that everyone can get as much information and knowledge out from it.

Pre-event experience engagement

Timeline board

We wanted to engage with designers around the globe even before we announce the ticket sales months ago to get some traction and also to understand what are people's thoughts on how UX has evolved over the years by having them contribute their thoughts on the Miro board I helped design.

Comparison between the first version (top) and the final version (bottom)

This is how it looks like after launching to the public. Notice that each of the sub-events in each year has a spotlight as a bullet point (tying back to the spotlight or cone pattern visual to look to the future)

Signals board

The other pre-event engagement activity was Signals board. This board's purpose is to visualise the connection between Signals (specific evidence that foreshadow a future that may come) and Drivers (broader trends like tech, social changes)

Early explorations of Signals. I visualise it as from the looks of synapse inside our brains because they contribute signals to each other

Web design

Ticketing cards

I also redesign some sections of the event landing pages like the ticket sales section and the event schedule listing.

We tested some variations of the ticket card like having it look like traditional ticket but ultimately decided to keep it simple so that we can launch the ticket sales on time since it needs to be coded as soon as possible as well by another member.

Conference schedule page

The schedule page was the page I got to be more ambitious and creative but due to the lack of time from the developer we couldn't utilise the new design I proposed. In the end we utilised the old design from last year which can be seen here.

Marketing assets

The spotlight pattern is the main visual element that should appear in every design we create. Sonia and I utilised that spotlight visual to create a reusable pattern that is suitable to display more than 1 speaker and also use it to shout out other information on social media. At the same time, other members can customise the message or update the visuals easily without having to come to us.

Event experience critical designs

The event was hosted on Zuddl a virtual event hosting platform where it provides the organiser to not only host talks around the world but also has various function for the attendees to communicate with the speakers and network with others.

Other visuals and assets

This is the intro screens I developed for the events Youtube videos featuring some of the best UX practitioners around the world. The arrows was meant to visualise how the spotlight moves before transitioning to the actual content.

The video below shows how the animations works in the beginning

A fun and exciting project!

I was grateful to be invited to help out with the visuals. This was one of those projects that enabled me to practise some graphics design and at the same user interface design. It challenged me to think more creatively and abstractly to solve problems with graphical elements.
